Breakthrough For Malik’s Career
While Swedish filmmaker, Malik Bendjelloul, had some other documentaries about musicians under his belt, this was definitely the breakthrough documentary of his career. He won the 2013 BAFTA Award, Directors Guild of America, Producers Guild of America, Writers Guild of America, American Cinema Editors, the Sundance audience and special jury accolades and the 2012 International Documentary Association awards. Sadly, “Searching For Sugarman” would be the biggest success of his life.

Malik Bendjellou Found Dead In Sweden
Sadly, just one year after the documentary was released, Malik was found dead in Stockholm, Sweden. Bendjelloul was only 36.
