Her First Set
Karen managed to persuade her folks to get her a $300 Ludwig drum set. She was motivated by the skill possessed by her drummer friend Frankie Chavez. However, Karen was not only a curious teenager. She turned out to be particularly adept at the instrument! In fact, she was able to master Dave Brubeck’s ‘Take Five’ in 5/4 time.

Trio
Everything started with a decision to form a jazz trio. Karen and Richard teamed up with Wesley Jacobs, Richard’s friend from college. Richard was the pianist, Wesley was the bassist and tubist, and Karen was the drummer. At the time, Karen did not have a lot of singing when it comes to singing. However, this was remedied by vocal lessons.
