This Dog Was Filled With Confusion After She Gave Birth To Pups That Seemed Unusual

Published on 04/23/2021

When John and Katie Black took in their foster dog, they realized she was pregnant. They were also aware that the pups would be born soon. Nothing, however, could have prepared the couple for what they saw on the day of delivery. That’s because the litter was unlike any other – and their appearance was enough to perplex even their proud mother.

No Strangers To Dogs

The Blacks are no strangers to canines at all! They have three pets: Annie, Leroy, and Winchester, and they live in Raleigh, North Carolina. Since 2009, the couple has also provided a foster home for any dogs who require it. They’ve had 20 furbabies come in and out of their door in that time.

Foster Parents

The Blacks’ affection for our four-legged friends led them to become foster parents for the Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue shelter. Despite the fact that John and Katie do not care for animals for the sake of fame, they have received a lot of attention on social media. What is the reason for this? It’s all about that strange litter, as it turns out.

A Golden Retriever Named Rosie

Rosie, a golden retriever mix, is the mother of those unusual puppies, and she had been through a lot before she met John and Katie. Her previous owners had sadly abandoned her at a local shelter one evening in October 2017. Not only was Rosie, who was now homeless, pregnant, but she was also on the verge of giving birth. The puppies were so close that the facility’s manager feared they would end up in a shelter.

On the other hand, the manager knew exactly what to do: contact the Neuse River golden retriever caregivers. Rosie was then picked up by a volunteer from the rescue center the following day. This helper, too, was concerned about Rosie’s pregnancy’s progress. As they drove her to the Raleigh Vet Clinic for a check-up, they half-expected the dog to give birth.

On the other hand, Rosie was still with puppies when she arrived at the Blacks’ house in late October. The couple proudly uploaded a photo of Rosie to their Instagram account @ourgoldenyears after the expectant mother had settled into their home.

A Sweet Dog

Rosie’s new parents wrote on Instagram, “This is our new foster Rosie, who is very preggers and close to delivering her puppies.” The post continued, “She is a little shy and scared but very sweet.” But it wouldn’t be long before Rosie gave birth – and surprised her humans in the process.

They Were Surprised

Why were the Blacks surprised? When the four puppies arrived, they resembled a herd of cuddly cows – Holstein Friesian cattle, to be exact – rather than tiny dogs. In early November, Katie posted an Instagram update informing their followers of the unexpected new arrivals. “Not quite the puppy pile we were expecting,” she joked, “but we will gladly take four baby cows.”

They Looked Unusual

Regardless of how the puppies looked, the Blacks were pleased with the four-strong litter. Their unusual appearance was a source of amusement for friends and family. Later in November, Katie told a reporter from the Press Association, “My dad laughed for quite a while at the photos, initially.”

Katie continued, “[Dad] loved it and joked [that] it’s the type of photo that goes viral, and [that] I should post it somewhere.” The dog fosterer agreed, and Rosie and her pups – named Clarabelle, Betsy, Daisy, and Moo – were photographed and posted to Reddit. And it turns out Katie’s father was correct. The internet can’t seem to get enough of the canine “cows”!

Reddit Loved The Puppies

Katie’s post received not only 90,000 upvotes (a vote of confidence from Reddit users) but also 1,600 comments. For her first post on the site, those aren’t bad numbers! Katie’s father wasn’t the only one who thought the photo was amusing. The mismatched family was also popular among Redditors.

Witty Comments

One commenter said of the oddly marked pups, “Mama looks as confused about this as everyone else.” Another Redditor proposed a different – and less innocent – explanation for Rosie’s expression. “It’s guilt,” they wrote. “Her boyfriend’s a black lab, and he’s coming home any minute now.”

Who Could The Father Be

The Blacks weren’t any clearer on who the puppies’ father could have been, as it turned out. Katie told the Press Association, “We are not sure what breed the dad was. When we brought [Rosie] into our home… she was already in active labor.”

A Loving Mother

On the other hand, the puppies may not know who their father is, but they do have a wonderful mother. Unfortunately, Rosie’s life hasn’t been easy since. The mother of four developed an infection shortly after giving birth. Naturally, she was prescribed antibiotics and some extra help with the feeding of her newborns.

On the other hand, the Blacks were delighted to pitch in and help bottle-feed the dogs until Rosie recovered. Keeping their hands off the fluffy balls proved to be a difficult task for the couple. Katie, in particular, struggled to keep her cool when confronted with such cuteness.

The Pups Are Too Cute

Yes, the foster mother couldn’t stop herself from eating the puppies whole. “Practicing some AMAZING self-restraint in not biting Daisy’s tiny paws,” Katie later admitted on Instagram. It’s easy to empathize with her predicament. The sweet two-tone tykes will satisfy anyone with a serious taste for the completely adorable.

They Grew Quickly

The puppies, on the other hand, grew quickly. They each developed their own distinct personalities in the weeks that followed. “Daisy is a sweetheart but a little anxious/shy/hesitant/fearful,” Katie would write on Instagram in early December. “[But] Clarabelle is a hilarious, fearless spitfire.”

Saying Goodbye

The foster mom’s post continued, “Moo is a snuggly baby that likes to be held and cries when he wants attention. [And Betsy is] the sweetest and most gentle puppy, and I want to keep her!” However, as the four dogs grew older, Rosie and the Blacks realized it was time to say their goodbyes.

They Were Adopted

Yes, Betsy and Clarabelle were adopted by two different families in the first weeks of January 2018. While the puppies’ foster parents were sad to see them go, they were both adopted into beautiful homes. Their new humans are lavishing them with all the love and toys they could possibly desire.

The other two cow pups will eventually move on to find happy fur-ever homes as well. In the meantime, they’ll almost certainly benefit from the love and care that John and Katie Black have shown them. With how cute they are, it is certain that they would eventually get adopted too.

A Big Relief

But it was probably a relief for John and Katie to learn that the unique color of their pups’ coats was the biggest surprise in store. Craig Mcgettrick, on the other hand, is a different story. He had no idea what he was getting himself into when he rescued what he thought was a bunch of abandoned puppies in the trash.

Puppies In The Trash

Craig Mcgettrick’s thoughts no doubt turned to the little puppies he’d found in the trash as he logged onto Facebook. He might have wondered, “Who could have abandoned such helpless animals?” But there was an even bigger surprise waiting for him when he checked his message alerts. After all, if the comments were correct, the animals he’d rescued weren’t even puppies.

A Shocking Discovery

Craig Mcgettrick works as a mover in the Liverpool area of the United Kingdom. In fact, he was on the job with a coworker when they made the shocking discovery in March 2017. But what exactly did they find out?

Something Alive

When the workers were removing trash from a cluttered yard, they accidentally shifted a discarded mattress. But much to Mcgettrick’s surprise, what they discovered beneath the bedding wasn’t just more garbage. No, there was life beneath the surface. To be precise, there are five little things.

They Found Baby Animals

Yes, the two had found baby animals. On the other hand, the movers couldn’t figure out what the creatures were because they were so young. Mcgettrick assumed they were kittens or puppies, and he decided the latter was the more likely scenario.

Saving The Baby Animals

Mcgettrick told The Dodo in April 2017, “Those were probably the only two options I knew of. We thought someone had dumped them knowing we were going to remove the rubbish.” The movers, however, couldn’t bear leaving the helpless puppies behind, so they decided to save their lives.

Mcgettrick carefully packed his newly discovered treasures into a box for safe transportation. He thought a local animal rescue center would be the best place for them. As a result, he dropped them off and shared their pictures on social media.

Different Suspicion

Mcgettrick had no reason to suspect anything was wrong with the babies at first. Sure, they looked strange, but the initial Facebook comments seemed to confirm that they were puppies. On the other hand, someone else had a different suspicion and sought the advice of some experts.

National Fox Welfare Society

Yes, the National Fox Welfare Society received the “puppy” photos from a member of the public (NFWS). “We were contacted by a lovely lady called Beccie through our Facebook Page,” NFWS wrote in March 2017. The “puppies” were correctly identified at that point.

The NFSW post continued, “Beccie had sent a few photos asking if the babies in the photos were indeed fox cubs. [We] confirmed they certainly were.” The NFWS is a 20-year-old organization, so its experts were in the best position to spot baby foxes.

The NFWS is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting sick and injured foxes throughout the United Kingdom. The organization treats wild foxes and has facilities for those who are unable to be rehabilitated. The charity was clearly the best hope for helping Mcgettrick’s fox “pups” at the time.

Easily Mistaken As Puppies

“Beccie advised us that they had been taken to a rescue center in Liverpool mistakenly as puppies, not fox cubs,” the NFWS explained. It was an easy mistake to make because the puppies were so young. After all, fox babies don’t get their distinctive red fur until they’re a little older.

It Was Probably Their Home

The fox family had most likely made their home in the trash-filled yard where they were discovered. When their mothers go hunting, it’s not uncommon for fox cubs to be left alone in their dens. It’s no surprise that Mcgettrick mistook the cubs for abandoned puppies.

They Need To Act Quickly

In any case, the NFWS needed to act quickly to reunite the cubs with their mother before she moved on. Fortunately, Beccie was able to obtain contact information for both Mcgettrick and the animal shelter where the cubs were being held. Meanwhile, Paul McDonald, a local fox rescuer, was already assisting the NFWS.

The Fox Man

McDonald, also known as The Fox Man, works for Freshfields Animal Rescue in Liverpool. He was also happy to assist and agreed to return the cubs to their mother. The NFWS also made contact with the animal shelter in charge of the “puppies” and made arrangements for their collection.

Returning Them To Their Yard

McDonald returned the pups to their yard the same day, with permission from Karen, the property owner. The mother had apparently already gone out looking for her children. But, as The Fox Man explained to The Dodo, vixen behavior was nothing new to him.

Looking For The Mother

“I didn’t give the cubs any milk in order for them to be hungry so they’d cry out and call for their mum, which they did. [They were put] around the same place they were found. I knew the mum would be… checking the place she last had them,” explained McDonald.

Keeping Them Cozy

To keep the babies cozy, they were bundled up in a cardboard box with a hot-water bottle. It was then just a matter of waiting for the mother fox to resume her search. The vixen reappeared just over an hour later, looking for her cubs.

The Box Was Empty

The mother only took one cub at first, and it appeared that she had rejected the others. However, the vixen reappeared in the two hours that followed. “By 7:01 p.m., Paul text[ed] me a photo of the empty box,” NFWS posted on Facebook.

The Cubs Were Back To Where They Belonged

“All through this, I was letting Beccie and Craig know,” NFWS continued, “And everyone was so pleased that the cubs were back where they belonged… with mom! Special thanks to Beccie… Craig and Karen for their invaluable help and the Animal Sanctuary for agreeing to pass the cubs on.”

“[Also thanks] to Paul and his team for collecting the cubs and sitting patiently with hearts in mouths waiting for the vixen to return,” the post continued. “This story was only possible because of… every person mentioned above. It really is heart-warming to know that this combined teamwork reunited five fox cubs with their vixen mother. Well done everyone and thank you.”
