10 years after his father’s death, tragedy struck the family again. This time it was Anderson’s older brother, Carter. He committed suicide when he was only 23 by jumping from the 14th-floor of the Vanderbilt’s New York City apartment. His brother’s suicide was very traumatic and Anderson cites this event as the spark for his interest in pursuing a career in journalism. To explain, Anderson told Biography.com, “I became interested in questions of survival: why some people survive and others don’t…covering wars just seemed logical.”
