Reason For Half Mast

The reason behind the American flags flown at half mast on Gilligan’s Island was the real-life tragedy of John F. Kennedy’s death. Turns out, the show’s filming began right after John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Wow! Now, it’s not a mystery anymore why the opening credits show a half-mast flag. Truth be told, Gilligan’s Island completed the pilot on the same day of the JFK assassination, 22nd November,1963.

Inside Joke

Many years after the show, we’re taking the lid off with this one! Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Head Newton Minow wasn’t really someone creator Sherwood Schwartz liked. If truth be known, Schwartz loathed him. Thus, the creator thought that it was amusing to give the shipwreck the name the S.S. Minnow. It turned into an inside joke that Gilligan’s Island’s crew shared. With any luck, Minow never got wind of this!
