Published on 02/16/2020

Keep reading to find out how these three fishermen all made a discovery that tested their friendship as well as their personal limits. It started out as a normal fishing trip but soon evolved into a rescue mission when these friends noticed that there was something odd about the iceberg they had been passing by. This is a great story that shows their hearts of gold because they acted in a situation in which most people would simply turn a blind eye. Get ready to believe in the innate goodness of people once again!

The Trio

Mallory Harrigan, Cliff Russel, and Allan Russel are close friends who enjoy going fishing together. This made it all the more perfect to turn such a hobby into a great business. They bought a fishing boat of their own and launched a fishing company.

The Trio

One Boat

Although it was a fairly small business with a single boat and three people running it, they liked to do this. They all call Canada their home, so they had access to great fishing spots already. The three of them also knew the kind of fish they would find there and what the customers like.

However, it was impossible for them to know what they would bring home with them each and every time they sailed out. They never expected to have an easy time out there, but what happened that day was something they did not once think would happen.

Fishing Lifestyle

Fishing has to be one of the most demanding tasks on the planet! It is important to get up early to plan and then prepare for what the sea might have in store. Fishermen also have to spend a lot of energy and time out there to bring home a lot of fish. For people who do this on a daily basis, it becomes the way of life. Even though it can get hard, the three of them enjoy the time they get to spend together.

Built On Friendship

Fishing is a very serious business that will challenge even the tightest friendships you have. They have known each other for years, but you never know what will come up while fishing. At any rate, the three of them kept going with the business and stayed good friends even after they finished setting it up. In fact, they even claim that they are now closer than ever after working on the business together.

Job Duties

The job often involves sailing during difficult weather conditions and spending long hours out in the sea. They normally go home in the evening sporting bruises, bumps, and minor injuries. Even though they have suffered out at sea, they still liked to do their jobs.

Hard At Work

Not a single one of them ever complained about the hardships they had to endure during their fishing trips. They have never seriously considered quitting either! It is important that they love and respect each other. The work they do together only motivates them to keep going every single day no matter how tough things can get.

Morning

The beginning of the story was the moment Mallory, Allan, and Cliff set out to go to work one morning. All three of the crab fishermen hail from Labrador, Canada. That morning, they set out for the harbor. They did not have a single clue that things were going to be different today.

One Fine Day

It was a day that was going to change their lives, but there was no way that they would have known it that early on. They all got ready to go as usual. Mallory even felt good about the day ahead of them. However, she did not know what the day had in store for the entire gang.

She got up much earlier than she usually did. She then headed out to prep the boat before the others got there for work. She felt motivated and cheerful about the day at work by the time the others showed up.

Lists

One they all got together, they had to first check if everything was in order before they could get to work. They came up with the list to ensure that nothing was going to be missing by the time they sailed out. Their emergency tools were important should anything come up.

Screenshot 16

Lists

Preparation

If they failed to prepare or pack anything on the list, it was going to mean a longer day. After all, they would then have to return to the dock to get the item they forgot to bring with them. They did not want such a thing to happen, which is why they worked hard to ensure that their checklist was fulfilled before they headed out.

Heading Out To The Sea

Who would have thought that getting the boat ready was actually the easiest part of the job? Mallory, Allan, and Cliff liked to pass the time by joking about and telling stories. Even though they knew each other for a very long time already, they always had something to talk about.

Heading Out

A New Day

If you did not know this was the case, you might even assume that they had not seen each other for a long time every morning. This day followed the same pattern in that sense. All three worked together to make sure everything was ready but never failed to talk and goof off. They clearly did not have a single clue that this day was going to be different.

The Calm Before The Storm

In retrospect, this feels very much like the “calm” before the storm. The water was also in fine form that morning, so they thought it was going to be a smooth one. They then took the boat to a crabbing spot right by the coast. They only needed to sail a couple of miles to get there, which made it more ideal.

Dropping Their Baskets

Once they reached that spot, they switched off the boat’s engine and remained in the area. They always had great luck when they caught crabs there, so they hoped this day was going to be the same as ever. They put up crab pots and then put them on the ocean floor. Of course, they kept their fingers crossed that crustaceans were crawling all over the place! There was nothing left for them to do but wait.

Record-Breaking Year

They had to sit and simply allow the cages to be dragged along the floor. This would hopefully give the crabs the room and time to get inside and reach for the bait. Even though the crab season was almost over, they remained hopeful about ending it with a bang! Was their dream going to come true?

Screenshot 23

Record-Breaking Year

Out Of Luck

They have enjoyed a successful run for the past few weeks, so they hoped this was going to be the case on that day. However, they knew it was possible that their luck had run out. They had a great record for the year and hoped for more luck.

Omen In Crabs

Mallory, Allan, and Cliff distributed the load by putting one person in charge of manning the boat. Meanwhile, the two took care of the lines and ensured none got tangled. They knew the ropes already because they have done this so many times in the past. They were on their way to finishing the work, now that the cages were in the water. What comes after this?

Best Day

When it was time to pull out the cages, the three of them were stunned by what they saw. It turned out to be their best day so far! They then shared high fives and took their catch into the boat. They put the cages back in the water and hoped they would see the same result.

A New Fishing Spot

As they kept working over the course of the day, the crabs kept coming for the traps. This was starting to look like the day they would break their previous records. They finished their work on that spot and thought they were going to be even luckier if they moved to the icier water. However, they knew that they were going to face more danger the farther out they took the boat.

Dangerous Waters

That far from the shore, they could not even see birds. However, they did not worry because everything seemed calm and peaceful. The truth was that this was not the case. Who would have thought that there was something amiss in the background?

Screenshot 25

Dangerous Waters

One Wrong Turn

You will find a lot of icebergs floating around the Labrador Sea. This makes the area dangerous even for fishermen with lots of experience. If this fisherman missed important details or took a wrong turn during the trip, it might result in an accident or even death.

Something Up Ahead

Allan was assigned to lookout duty when he saw a huge iceberg in front of them. As he navigated his way around the iceberg, he noticed something about this chunk of ice. Even though icebergs were common in this part of the ocean, there was something odd about this one in particular.

Screenshot 24

The sun was beating down on them on that exceptionally bright day. It was harder for them to look at the huge thing in front of the boat. When the others checked out what Allan was looking at, they also noticed something strange about the iceberg. However, none of them could put a finger on it.

The Iceberg Appears!

As they got closer to the iceberg, they finally made out what made the piece of ice look so odd. At the top, there was a dark spot. It was impossible to figure out what it was because they were so far away. Mallory thought it was a seal trying to enjoy the sun. However, this theory did not sound right to them.

Taking A Closer Look

Cliff initially thought that his friend was onto something – maybe that creature was nothing more than a seal. They had seen plenty of those animals in these waters over the years they have been going there. However, Allan was not convinced. To him, there was something strange about the whole thing.

Closer Look

What Could It Be?

After using his binoculars to look at the creature there, Allan told the others that it did not look like it was a seal whatsoever. There was something odd about the way the animal moved. Mallory and Cliff eventually arrived at the same conclusion after observing the animal some more. It seems like Allan was right in thinking that there was more to this story.

Getting Closer

Even though they still planned to fish for the rest of the day, they agreed it was important to approach the iceberg some more. They were all curious now. They needed to figure out what was lying on top of this chunk of ice. The three of them approached to get a closer look. It was starting to get both colder and windier as they got nearer.

The Investigation

They knew it was risky to stray from the route they usually followed. However, Allan succeeded in convincing the others that this was worth the risk. If they did not do this, there was no way they would find out what animal was up there.

Approaching

It is great to hear that they agreed to find out together. While Mallory and Cliff did not think it was all that urgent, Allan convinced them anyway. There was no way he was going to let a poor animal suffer and die out there. They made up their minds and got closer to the chunk of ice.

Chilling Temperatures

It soon became clear that the creature stranded on top of the iceberg had fur. They could also tell that it was soaking wet! The wind was blowing hard over there, so they knew the tiny animal might not make it much further. At that moment, they knew there was nothing else to do but lend a hand. While they still did not know what animal they were dealing with, they let their compassionate sides take over.

Advance Slowly

It was important for them to move slowly as they navigated the icy waters. They knew that their boat might suffer some damage if a piece of ice went underneath it. Even worse, it might capsize and leave them stranded out in the cold! They did not want any such thing to happen, which is why they kept an eye peeled for any such danger.

Constant Watch

What made things even more challenging was the fact that the waves began to get higher! The movement of the boat started to get more precarious. Mallory warned Allan and Cliff to be careful. They felt both excited and curious as the boat approached the iceberg. However, it was still important for them to tread the waters with caution. They were wary about any potential danger out there.

Sadly, the wind began to grow stronger and the waves started rocking the boat and the iceberg at the same time. Even though they could deal with these huge waves, they now had to worry about the reaction of the animal to the movement.

They needed to worry about something else on top of the rocking boat. Mallory feared that this poor animal would get so scared that it would simply jump into the water instead. If they could only get a little closer, she was going to see enough to sort out the problem.

Tricky Circumstances

If they wanted to keep up with the iceberg, it was important for them to increase the boat speed. You can just imagine how much trickier it was to navigate the to the iceberg. The situation became even more dangerous because nightfall was getting close. They needed to return to the shore soon!

Getting A Glimpse

As they got near the iceberg, they could finally take a closer look at the animal. They saw that it had a shape similar to a dog. For one thing, it came with four legs as well. However, there was no reason a puppy would be on top of this iceberg. What was it really?

From there, they could see that the animal was shivering and soaking. It hit them that it was important to work together to save this poor creature. They needed to do everything they could to ensure that it was not going to freeze to death. Who would have thought it was going to get even trickier?

Arctic Fox

As they got closer to the iceberg, they finally realized what this animal actually was. It was not a seal – it was an Arctic fox! They did not have time to wonder how it got there, however. It was not only weak and cold, but there were also birds hovering above it! The fox might become lunch if they did not act.

It seemed like the other animals in the area knew this fox was on its way to passing away. They needed to act quickly. They came to the decision to help it and make sure it lives a good life. The crew had to put their fishing expedition on hold until they figured out what they had to do. Now that they knew what they should do, it did not matter to them that it could get dangerous.

However, this Arctic fox was not like a tamed house pet at all. Instead of coming closer, it only moved away. There was no place for it to go, so it was basically trapped there. Even though it was safer on the boat than outside, the fox felt alarmed by their presence and then jumped into the water again! They followed it around until it got too tired to move.

It was then that Allan scooped the animal out of the water and then took it back to the boat. The fox was clearly scared and moved away from the fishermen right away. Unanswered Questions

The cold and the wind ruffled the wet fur of the poor fox. Even though Allan and Cliff had towels to warm and dry it off, they still knew it was possible the animal might attack them. How long was it going to take before the fox started to trust them? Was it even going to survive the ride back to the shore?

It was important for them to warm up the fox before it passed away there. Mallory was the one in charge of steering the boat back home. However, they still had a couple of miles to go before they reached the shore. It was going to take a little while before they got there.

Mallory then came up with a way they could keep the animal warm. She said it might be a good idea to create a nest for it. The others found sawdust in the boat, which might help keep the animal warm. They then took the sawdust and created a warm bed for the little critter. It should be enough to insulate heat.

They put the sawdust in a plastic bin, which they wanted to serve as a bed for the fox. Hopefully, this will offer the little critter some security and warmth. They still had half an hour to go when Cliff replaced Mallory on the wheel. He realized that they needed to adjust their course if they wanted to get to the shore even sooner. Mallory then headed for the galley to retrieve some of the food they kept for their own use. She took out a couple of Vienna sausages, put them in the water, and gave them to the fox. It seems like the fox preferred this! It scarfed down all the sausages. This must be the first time it ate in days.

After it finished all the sausages that they put down for him, the fox returned to sleep. It did not wake up again until they got to the shore. Mallory only hoped that it would calm down after she started talking to the animal. She only needed it to stay calm until they finished docking.
