The most popular theory is that the owner of the Tamaya 1 became insolvent and was then unable to pay the wages of the crew. As a response to the situation, the crewmen must have decided to abandon the ship then and there. “Our best bet is that the vessel’s owner might have gone broke and had no money to pay crew members,” a port authority source explained. There is another theory going around, however.

Pirate activity is actually a problem for the African continent. The most famous incident happened near the Horn of Africa and Somalia – it was even depicted in the film Captain Philips! The plot drew from the Maersk Alabama hijacking in 2009. Even though the fight vs. pirates has been largely successful now, let’s not forget that pirates terrorized the waters surrounding Africa for around 15 years! This was why some people believe that the Tamaya 1 crew had been kidnapped – unless something even worse happened.
