Officer Raymond McCurdy was not someone you would want to mess with. Having dealt with so many injustices in life, he was not one to take things lying down. He believed that what his daughter’s school did was completely unacceptable – and a criminal offense in his eyes. When he saw the tearstained face of his little girl getting off the bus, he immediately thought somebody was going to pay.

It all started when the McCurdys moved to Florida and little Amy had to start attending Belle Terre Elementary School, her new school. At her previous school, there hadn’t been anything like this, so her parents didn’t really see the need to worry about her. They had no idea that the rules were now different for young Amy.

At her new school, there were no on-demand bathroom breaks. Amy would need to wait for the permission of the teacher, so the little girl raised her hand to go to the bathroom. Amy was taught to do this but her teacher made her wait. Even though Amy had said it was urgent, her request was ignored, which led to a really unfortunate incident for the young one.

Squirming in her seat, Amy raised her hand and waited for the teacher to see her. The teacher was writing on the whiteboard and the little girl stared at her back. Amy wished the teacher would turn around and see that she was really desperate to use the bathroom. While the teacher did glance around and did make eye contact, she ignored Amy. Unable to hold it anymore, the little girl wet herself in her seat.

It was already mortifying that she wet herself in her seat, but Amy went through a whole lot more, which made the situation much worse. She was sitting in class with her classmates and we know how mean children can be. Finally, the teacher responded to what was clearly an emergency and sent the young one to the school office in order to clean herself up. Even though Amy did not have any spare clothes with her, the school didn’t call her parents to bring in any and did something instead that would make any parent see red.

After being cleaned up, Amy was given school-issued panties… and that was all they gave her. She had no choice but to put on her soiled shirt to cover herself. They didn’t even give the 6-year-old a pair of pants that she could wear for the day. However, it didn’t end here.

The day finally came to an end. The school put Amy on the bus so that she could go home. She was just wearing her soiled shirt and some random panties. She had been subjected to ridicule throughout the day, so she started to sob. Her dad saw Amy crying when she got off the bus and understandably, he saw red.

Her dad saw the soiled stain on Amy’s shirt and lifted her clothing right away to find out what had happened. He was livid to learn she was not wearing pants at all. Wasting no time, he drove straight to the school so that he could find out why his little had been sent home like this. The school never saw him coming.

“We asked the assistant principal why my daughter was sent home in just panties and a T-shirt, and she begins to tell me, ‘We thought she had a long enough shirt to be able to put her on the school bus and send her home.” For Raymond, that answer was just not good enough and there was hell to pay.

Besides the humiliation that his daughter was subjected to throughout the whole day and the entire bus ride, Raymond had another complaint. The school expects parents to send their children to school following the school dress code. However, the school definitely did not comply with the rules when they sent young Amy, their student, home in what she was wearing. What was their response to that?

Belle Terre Elementary School’s policy handbook states that jumpers, skirts, skorts, or shorts are acceptable if they stop within four inches above the knee. He demanded, “They make me send her to school in clothes to their expectations, why couldn’t you send my kid home in clothes to your expectations?” However, the school even had the gall to say something which landed them in hot water.

Raymond measured the t-shirt to check whether it fit the dress code of the school and it failed the test miserably. Seething, he exclaimed, “That’s 4 ½ inches right there, and it’s still shorter than that!” If the school wouldn’t take accountability for not allowing his daughter to take a much needed bathroom break, perhaps the law could be involved regarding the dress code violation. However, Amy’s mom, Jennifer, was angry for a different reason.

Jennifer raised a good point. Why hadn’t the school called either of the parents instead of leaving the girl to feel embarrassed the whole day? “There are four contacts on our daughter’s emergency card. Pick up the phone and call us. We will come to fetch our child.” Aside from that, the school was fully aware of the medical condition that Amy has.

Furious, Raymond said, “She’s been through enough in her life already and she’s only 6.” He added, “She has medical issues and when she has to go she has to go.” Both Jennifer and Raymond said the school was well aware of their daughter’s medical condition, which makes her need to go to the bathroom often. The parents have since gotten legal advice to remedy the situation in order for this type of thing to never happen again to their child, nor anyone else’s.

This incident has made young Amy’s parents concerned. They started to wonder what goes on behind closed doors in the school. Jennifer mentioned, “Now that we come here, we have all these issues. There’s obviously something more going on than what we’re seeing.” The parents who got wind of how the school had treated Amy were furious as well.

This is the statement that Belle Terre Elementary School issued: “There are procedures and protocols when incidents such as this happen.” They also got in touch with Rodger and Jennifer McCurdy to invite them to discuss their grievances. They also told the parents they will be presenting the findings of the internal investigation they did after the incident. However, it was just too little, too late.

The part which made Rodger the most furious about was that the school sent his young daughter home without pants. This could have exposed her to predators. He said nothing like this had ever happened at Amy’s previous school. She had come home fully clothed all the time. He has hired a lawyer and is set on making the school pay for the incident, but is he right?

Concerned parents voiced their opinion on the matter. Courtney Dery wrote: “They did WHAT!!!! This is unacceptable someone better be punished if not sued for public humiliation. This isn’t something that’s just going to go away this child will be haunted her whole entire life. They should’ve called the parents to come and get her.”

According to a report in The Journal of Urology, 15 out of 100 children in grade school wet their pants in class. Teachers not issuing on-demand bathroom breaks can lead to humiliating consequences for the child. In addition, Kindergarteners and first graders are quite young and they are still learning bladder control. Personally, we believe the backlash that the school is getting is justifiable.
