Navin Engineer was born Navinchandra Jamnadas Engineer in 1951. Together with his wife Varsha, he founded Chemidex, a chemical company, in 1981. His father was once employed by the Kenyan civil service. His first place of employment was at the chemist pharmacy chain, Boots. Apparently, he quit on the same day his manager asked him to grab her a cup of tea. As a pharmacist, he was shocked by her disrespect and walked out. He opened the first pharmacy of his company in Surrey and then expanded it to thirteen more locations. It was bought out by Celesio and received the first pharma brand in 2000.
