Originally Sam Elliott was going to be cast for the role of Robert E. Lee, but there was some objection when someone who remains unnamed said, “If he plays that part, I’m not gonna do the movie.” Elliott was fine with that since he felt the character of Brigadier General John Buford was much more interesting.

Clooney’s Eyes
When talking about working with George Clooney on the set of Up In The Air, Sam Elliott couldn’t stop thinking about Clooney’s eyes. “The one thing I remember of that was looking at [George] Clooney’s eyes. Clooney’s got a set of shark eyes, man. I mean, they’re deep and they’re dark. And it kind of disarmed me.”
