A Short Reprieve
While navigating their way in the unfamiliar field, the whole crew contracted malaria. It was a stroke of luck that a native had found them and helped them regain their health back. Once their health got better, they set off again to find their base and reunite with their troops. They were finally reunited with the US forces and were welcomed with a heroes’ celebration. But it was a brief moment of relief since they were deployed on a new mission.
Sunk In Oblivion
The crew had safely returned and had been assigned a mission again. Meanwhile, the Flying Fortress was left behind in the middle of nowhere. The war had come to an end, but no one gave a second thought about the Flying Fortress. The troops went back to their homes. For several decades, knowledge of the half-submerged aircraft was only shared among local residents. The US forces never made an effort to retrieve the aircraft from the crash site as if they had completely forgotten about it. In 1972, it was the Royal Australian Air Force the rediscovered the broken plane while they flew over the swamplands and news of the Swamp Ghost blew up in international media.
