Viewership
Fox News was tickled pink when saw how well the Tucker Carlson Tonight was doing. In its first two months, the show was averaging 2.8 million viewers, which meant it was a jump of 23% in viewership for the 7pm slot.
No Chance Of Failure
Fox News have had many candidates who could have easily taken over for The O’Reilly Factor, however, they wanted someone familiar, someone in-house. They responded to allegations of favoritism by stating that Fox doesn’t believe in letting their “talent” fail. By choosing insiders over a high-profile outsider, Fox News instantly reduced the possibility that an anchor wouldn’t “take” with their loyal audience. So basically they replaced O’Reilly with Carlson because they knew it was a smart business decision. It didn’t matter what Fox News said though, people were still pissed. They didn’t accept that this was the reason for Carlson’s promotion.
