Besides the university, Vanderbilt also bought a church and donated to many churches in the New York area. He gave a big gift to the Moravian Church on Staten Island for a cemetery. He chose to be buried there.

After Cornelius died, his son William acquired the family fortune. He was then the richest man in America until he died in 1885.
