It really irked Clare that the adults accused her of initiating “impure thoughts”. She felt like she was supposed to be “the bad guy” when she was complying with all the rules. She wondered why on earth she had to take responsibility for what the other boys and men might think.

Clare was not ready to sit back and do nothing. Instead, she tried to reason with Mrs. Duncan, showing her and explaining to her that she was doing absolutely nothing wrong.
