Battle of the Bands
The three of them were able to win the Battle of the Bands competition held at Hollywood Bowl in 1966. This gave them the opportunity to sign with RCA records. However, this would not become their big break as the label fired them under the belief that they would be flops. Karen graduated from high school the next year and enrolled in Long Beach State. The trio did not let the ordeal discourage them and they were allowed to record in the studio in Joe Osborn’s house.

Small Time Job
Once Karen was able to complete her college degree, she had to find a job in order to support herself. It may come as a surprise that she did not begin immediately go into music! For a while, she was actually working at a printing business.
